Erotic Stories - Top 10 Writing Tips

swinging couples erotic storiesOver the years, I have often had erotic stories sent to me for my input and comment and more often than not, I find them a bit amateurish.  To help those of you who see yourselves as budding erotic authors, I have added this article on tips to writing an erotic story.

1) No cliches or trite euphemisms. Do not revert "her budding flower" or his "trouser snake", but don't write like a biologist describing sex- "vagina" just is not that alluring of a word. Attempt to discover a happy medium that isn't cheesy.

2) Do not skimp out. So many people believe that if you're writing about sex, particularly erotic stories that are meant to obtain people off, that all of the sudden absolutely nothing truly matters- you don't have to pay attention to character, setting, plot, good dialogue, or anything like that. Wrong! In good erotic stories, these issues are paramount, and don't you forget it.

3)Write characters who are familiar. Your objective is to hit the character of a man or woman that your readers can empathize with, but who, obviously, has sex that's a little hotter, a little wilder, a little more frequent. Most women are not going to relate to a female protagonist who gets gang-banged and double penetrated and adores it from the start, so you've got to keep that sort of thing in mind. It does not need to restrict the sort of sexual scenarios you write about- please, individuals adore fantasies, the crazier the much better!- but you'll need to let us into the mind of the realistic characters so that it feels close to home, like something that could happen to us, and never forget the internal dialogue, the ongoing commentary on your characters' emotions, as they go about the scene.

4) Remember that in any erotic story, sexual tension is really a massive part of things; it whets the appetite. Especially because few writers can actually compellingly create sexual intercourse for more than a couple of pages (it tends to obtain boring and lose the reader), the build-up is important. Nevertheless you draw it out, write it nicely, and you will be off to a great begin.

5) Do not forget that erotic stories aren't just meant to be turn-ons. The most memorable, wonderful erotic stories that I've read has been stuff that is gotten me aroused as well as produced me laugh, made me believe, produced me angry, produced me sad, etc., etc.. Your work can be hot and humorous, it can be hot and political, it could be any combination you set your sights on.

6) When it comes to the actual sex writing, it's all about the selection of sensory details. You want to firmly ground the details in sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell, with none being much more important than the other. Love-making is primal and deep-it hits us in some of our most intuitive locations, like with smell, taste, and sound. So have fun. And keep in mind it is about selection of details, not all of them at as soon as. You'll lose a reader with a sentence like "Her big, soft breasts bounced up and down haphazardly with wet thwacking sounds against his sweat-slicked chest.", but taking that detail and paring it down to the sound: "Her moans spliced the steady rhythym of her breasts slapping his chest." is a lot better- it gives the reader a focus. Get rid of needless adjectives and reduce your sentences.

7) Any time you can make it personal, do so. You are not just describing a sex scene, you're describing a sex scene with people in it. So instead of becoming a reporter telling what's happening, act like an interviewer, and give the individuals doing it a opportunity to reflect on what's going on. "He thrust into her." is boring and impersonal; "He completed the final act of his domination over her, staking the final claim to her body by pushing inside it." definitely gives me much more information, though they both explain the exact same act. Anytime you are able to put context into your description of an action, do so. It is what holds your writing out and makes it unique and unique, simply because anybody can write the equivalent of "He put it in, he pulled it out, she moaned and groaned.".

8) Make certain you know what you're talking about. This sounds self-evident, but oftentimes, it is just not a rule individuals adhere to. Particularly if you are cross-writing (you are a man writing as a female character, or vice-versa), if you are marketing your stuff to the opposite sex, or even to other groups, like a vanilla individual writing BDSM, vice-versa, or writing about an additional sexual orientation (hey, plenty of lesbians really write gay male erotic stories, and vice-versa), then you've got to do your study. You do not have to write about things you've only had exerperience in; virgins can write fantastic erotic stories. But you'll need to do research- find out what it is really like for a lady to have an orgasm, determine what it's that actual lesbians do in bed. Simply because whenever you do, your readers will instantly feel that sexual flush of knowledge - that 'yes, that's exactly how it is for me.' that turns a dirty story into a mouth watering, expanded-upon memory-slash-fantasy; it puts them into the story in a way that is otherwise not possible.

9) Keep in mind that an erotic story doesn't need to be intimate or lustful. Within the real world, individuals don't just have sex when they express their love to 1 an additional or are feeling horny. People have sex for many different reasons- simply because they're horny, simply because they're in love, because they're angry, because they wish to reach out to someone, simply because they're guilty, simply because they're scared, simply because they wish to have a baby . . . and so on. Sex is hugely emotional- it's a rollercoaster, and in the event you wish to write sex that is compelling, you will understand that and document it. You are able to write hot sex between characters who hate every other; it is counter-intuitive, but true. Make your sex have actual emotions- fear, greed, guilt, anger, despair, joy, worry, etc.- and it will be much more realistic, and resonate more strongly for your readers.

10) Immerse yourself in the genre. As the saying goes, the best method to learn to do something would be to practice, and also to study the works of the greats who have come before you, and it is eminently true here. Other individuals are already published, have won awards, and their stuff is what you would like to analyze- take a look at how they do issues and why they work, and then attempt to do it on your own- not emulating or duplicating, but utilizing their tried-'n'-true techniques to express your own unique tale. So study your Emma Holly, Portia Da Costa, Zane, Cecilia Tan, Susie Bright, Carol Queen, Jaid Black, A. N. Roquelaure (Ann Rice's pen name), Pat Califia, M. Christian, and so many more. Browse the classics- Anais Nin, D.H. Lawrence, the Biblical Song of Solomon. This has most likely got to be the funnest- and frequently probably the most helpful- component of learning to write erotic stories.
